Since you have collected artwork from many different places over the years, it is important to keep abreast of current fluctuations in the worldwide art market. The National Institute of Appraisers (NIA) has spent over 25 years handling fine art appraisals on everything from antiquities through contemporary art for corporate and individual collectors. The NIA offers valuations for insurance purposes, donation, resale, divorce, estate/probate situations, or simply  for you to find out "what is it worth?".

 

The NIA resume is impressive: clients include nearly every government agency, such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the U.S. Marshall’s Office, as well as corporate powerhouses like AT&T, Times Mirror, CBS Television, Hilton Hotels, Dow Chemical, Shell Oil Co. and Paramount Pictures.  The NIA has appraised more than 15,000 private, university and museum collections around the world and is also the leading source for the California Bar Association to use as expert witness testimony.

 

The NIA is an organization comprised of certified appraisers with expertise in nearly 20 areas of fine art (see below). The NIA charges a flat-fee per item to appraise artwork.  There are no hourly or percentage charges (as some appraisers assess) so you will know the total costs, up-front. 

 

Entrust the NIA with your fine art pieces. The NIA will maintain the strictest of confidentiality to you and, to avoid any conflict of interest, does not engage in the buying, selling, or referral of sale of any artwork.

For almost three decades, the NIA has been a highly selective membership organization of the nation's leading appraisers of fine art. Its internationally respected membership deals primarily in paintings, drawings, photographs, graphics and sculpture from antiquity to contemporary works of art. 

 

The members are chosen by the Board of Directors after consultation and examination by the entire membership, and is limited to appraisers who have worked in their Field of expertise for a minimum of 10 years. An NIA Certified Appraisal is designed to fulfill all requirements of insurance companies and in the case of donations, all requirements of IRS tax law.

 

No Certified Appraisal by any member of the NIA has ever been overturned or rejected by an insurance company or the IRS.  The NIA has also been appointed to the Panel of Experts for the Superior Court of Los Angeles County.

 

By charter, Senior Appraisers are prohibited from the buying or selling of fine art which in the opinion of the NIA constitutes a conflict of interest.
